Basic Machine Sewing

Learn the basics of your sewing machine in 4 two-hour sessions.

Supplies Needed: - Supplies are NOT included in the course, these are the minimum required -

• Sewing machine - Bring your own machine to the studio so that you can familiarize yourself with YOUR machine

• Fabric - 1 yard WOVEN cotton muslin

                1 plain cotton canvas drop cloth

• 1 spool Cotton or polyester thread (we recommend Coats &Clark Dual Duty)

• Sewing pins

  
  

Session 1 -

• Learn the parts of your machine

• Threading your machine and adjusting tension

• Winding the bobbin

• Stitch selection

• Basic joining and how to sew mitred corners

Session 2 -

• Simple project - Tote Bag

• Making a basic pattern

• finishing seams

• adding a pocket

• making and attaching straps

Session 3 -

• Finishing techniques (tote bag)

• Choosing a new project (pillow case or hat)

• Using up-cycled fabrics

• altering a pattern for size

Session 4 -

• Finish outstanding projects.

• Adding extras - zippers, buttons, embelishments.
