Service Description

A comprehensive 6-session course specifically designed for teens ages 13-17 to master Manga art. Students will learn character design, dynamic posing, and storytelling techniques to bring their original visions to life. Materials Provided: Each student will get Bristol comic paper, a nib holder, a G-nib and a maru nib, a small bottle of ink, and a blue colored pencil (for sketching). Explore the depths of creating manga by learning the exact materials, techniques, and drawing strategies that professional and published manga authors in Japan use. Learn how to use a G-nib & ink, panel and speech-bubble layout, and how to draw lively and dynamic characters by creating your own few-paged original manga. Instructor Kye White graduated from Savannah College of Art & Design with a Sequential art major, has been an editor for Webtoon comics, and has created short comics of her own. Session overview: Day 1 - Start off by giving the basics of how to use a G-nib & ink, bristol paper, and the blue pencil for sketching. Then get into your original comic right away - start writing an aspect for your own original comic that is ideally 2-3 pages long. A step-by-step handout will be provided to help you learn how to formulate a very basic, easy comic script. Day 2 - We will collaborate on each other's stories and finish up the writing. Students will draw their character concepts for their comic. We will look at examples of panel layout by popular manga authors and the instructor's work. Students will do an inked test manga panel. Day 3 - Will be dedicated to sketching out the 2-3 pages of the comic students have planned. Instructor guidance will focus on layout of panels, the placement for speech bubbles, and drawing tips. (Fixing anatomy, how to make a facial expression work better, composition.) Day 4 - Will be dedicated to finishing student sketching if not finished last class and going on to inking. Instruction will include a short demonstration of inking a sketch. Instructor guidance along the way on using the nib, how to fix mistakes, and how to make panels look more dynamic by using line weight and marking. Day 5 - Will be dedicated to continuing to ink pages. Instruction will continue to provide guidance. A short break from drawing will focus on observing examples from professional manga authors and their ways of inking. Day 6 - The entire class will be dedicated to finishing up their inking and then sharing students' finished stories.
